A recent report from security vendor Malwarebytes has found a major bug in Ubuntu, as has shown a couple of similar Malwarebytes products, such as Threat Intelligence.
The bug, named CVE-2017-0015, exists in Ubuntu's X-Windows-KMS drivers, and affects every version of the driver which have a graphical user interface.
The bug can be triggered by an infected user running a vulnerable X-Server, and when that happens the X Window System will load a malicious image onto the display:
The file is not supposed to be read by any user. default, X Window System uses a copy of the.pixmap file provided by xdg-utils. The xdg-utils package is part of the Ubuntu base distribution. attacker can use this malicious window image to gain elevated access the host. attacker uses this elevated access to install and execute malicious code that is installed in the host OS.
Because of this vulnerability Ubuntu users, who open or edit windows using the X-Windows-KMS driver, are at risk of a remote X Window System attack.
"The risk is that a person visiting https://kms-kms.ubuntu.com/desktop will be forwarded to an attacker-controlled web page," the report says.
The Malwarebytes security researchers have provided a proof of concept which shows how the vulnerability may be exploited. To exploit the bug is easy: a computer with vulnerable X-Windows-KMS driver is enough.
"Once the attacker has compromised a machine, local user can use any menu option to launch an X server image, provided by the attacker and signed with a valid certificate. Once this image is launched, it can read any file in the user's home directory and execute any arbitrary code on the computer."
The authors are aware of problem and suggest Ubuntu users who use Ubuntu's X-Windows-KMS driver should disable the feature and switch to a different display server. Linux distributions such as Ubuntu may already be patched up against the vulnerability.
